天美传媒 Bay Community College is preparing the next generation of first responders and emergency-management specialists with the introduction of a new two-year Associate of Science degree in Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

New this fall, the degree program expands on 天美传媒 Bay鈥檚 existing certificate in Homeland Security by adding emergency management components. It focuses on the four phases of emergency management: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. Both programs are geared toward individuals interested in responding to and preparing for disasters.

天美传媒 Bay is the first community college in New Hampshire to offer a two-year degree in the field. It will provide emergency-management professionals with the skills and expertise necessary to plan for and respond to natural and man-made disasters and emergencies. The new degree comes at a time when the market for homeland security and emergency-management jobs is growing in both public and private sectors.

鈥淭his is a critical career field for our nation.听The homeland security and emergency management disciplines put professionals in the field who focus on preventing emergencies and minimizing their effects, preparing to handle emergencies, responding to emergencies when they occur, and recovering after the fact,鈥 said Eric Kulberg, department chair and professor of Criminal Justice. 鈥淭hese professionals are saving lives and reducing the impact on our economy.鈥

With topics that include homeland security, emergency management, terrorism, crisis planning, and national incident management systems, the program will prepare students for hands-on careers across a range of fields, including as emergency-management directors, safety coordinators, and disaster-recovery managers. In addition to emergency management, career options include law enforcement, military service, corporate security, and risk management.

鈥淐OVID-19 showed that emergency management is not only a government function but something private companies must also consider,鈥 Kulberg said.听鈥淔ortune 500 companies have emergency managers planning for disasters for years.听And now, smaller and smaller companies are seeing the value of emergency planning.鈥

Justin Cutting, director of the New Hampshire Department of Safety鈥檚 Division of Fire Standards and Training & Emergency Medical Services, said 天美传媒 Bay students are well prepared to assume roles in both the fire service and emergency medical services, especially those who aspire for positions of leadership in their organizations or plan to be part of an emergency-management team.

鈥淢any fire and EMS leaders are also local emergency management directors in their communities,鈥 Cutting said. 鈥淧roper planning and response to emergency incidents is essential to positive outcomes.鈥

Kimberly LaShomb, an emergency management specialist at the VA Bedford Healthcare System in Massachusetts, said the Homeland Security certificate she received from 天美传媒 Bay is the foundation of her career. At the VA, LaShomb plays a critical role planning and coordinating emergency response programs and activities. Those range from potential and actual natural, wartime, and technological disasters, to terrorism or hostage situations, to the pandemic and the work required to protect the public health of her community. She also trains others in disaster preparation.

Her ascent to the top of her field began at 天美传媒 Bay, where she completed a certificate in Homeland Security soon after 天美传媒 Bay began offering it. She has done many things in her career, including serving as a police officer at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery and as an antiterrorism officer with the U.S. Department of Defense.

鈥淭he emergency management program is great because it鈥檚 going to give a baseline to the field,鈥 she said. 鈥淓mergency management is an interesting field because you have to be the jack-of-all-trades to understand it and can dabble in everything from safety to business operations. As a hiring manager within the field, I look for candidates with the appropriate level of training and knowledge, especially experience in incident command.鈥

The two-year degree is an outgrowth of the college鈥檚 certificate program. The certificate can be a way to 鈥渢est the waters鈥 in the field and see if students enjoy the topics, Kulberg said. 鈥淭he genesis of the certificate was to meet the demand for homeland security professionals after 9/11.听COVID-19 showed the importance of preparing and responding to disasters. The degree was developed to meet the demand for emergency preparation.鈥

The certificate requires 16 to 18 credits, while the degree is 61 to 65 credits. Good candidates are people new to the field, including recent high school graduates or those looking for a career change, as well as people who currently work in emergency response. Faculty members with extensive experience in the homeland security field teach the curriculum.

Gather Caf茅 at 天美传媒 Offers Students Donated, Low-Cost Food Options /gather-cafe-opens-at-gbcc/ Fri, 09 Sep 2022 18:37:54 +0000 /?p=26338

天美传媒 and Gather鈥檚 partnership recognizes and fills a need to reduce hunger among students

PORTSMOUTH – A free lunch for students and a ribbon cutting ceremony at 天美传媒 Bay Community College (天美传媒) marked the grand opening of the Gather Caf茅 at 天美传媒 Bay, a new campus-based kitchen and caf茅. The caf茅 opened in collaboration with Gather, a Portsmouth-based food pantry, to provide donated meals to food insecure students along with affordable, convenient, healthy food options on campus. Today鈥檚 event celebrated the continuation of a longstanding partnership and will positively impact students鈥 ability to achieve academic success and ultimately graduate.

鈥淭he continuation and expansion of Gather and 天美传媒 Bay鈥檚 partnership will have a positive impact as we collaboratively fight food insecurity in our community and among our students,鈥 said Dr. Cheryl Lesser, president of 天美传媒 Bay Community College. 鈥淭he Gather Caf茅 at 天美传媒 Bay is another highly accessible on-campus option for providing food assistance to our students.鈥

Recently named an official New Hampshire Food Bank Agency, 天美传媒, and Gather, the Seacoast area鈥檚 largest hunger relief organization, have been working together for three years to combat food insecurity. In 2019, together the two organizations opened the Campus Cupboard, a grab-and-go food pantry providing healthy, sustainable snacks and personal hygiene products to 鈥渇eed student success鈥 while on campus. In January 2021 when classes were online and the campus was closed due to the pandemic, the two organizations distributed thousands of pounds of supplemental groceries such as milk, bread, eggs, dry goods and fresh produce to students through a weekly curbside food pickup service.

Through the partnership, Gather, which distributes two million pounds of food each year, has use of 天美传媒鈥檚 1,000 square foot commercial-grade kitchen to support its Cooking4Community program. This food repurposing project prepares 600 meals per week for the Seacoast community, and 60 meals will go directly to 天美传媒 students.

鈥淕ather is thrilled for the opportunity to build on its long-term relationship with 天美传媒 and further collaborate to reduce food insecurity,鈥 said Tania Marino, director of the Gather Caf茅 and Cooking4Community program. 鈥淭he Gather Caf茅 at 天美传媒 Bay is positioned to become a meeting spot for all those seeking community, where delicious, affordable, and nutritious food will be accessible to all.鈥

According to numerous national studies, more than 50 percent of community college students suffer from food insecurity. This drastically inhibits learning and creates significant persistence challenges for many students who lack access to regular meals. Research shows the importance of consuming quality food in supporting increased academic focus, persistence and success.

鈥溙烀来 Bay and Gather have been helping students for over three years and opening the Caf茅 at 天美传媒 Bay will provide another helpful option for students who need a little help,鈥 said Doriana CentiPizzutilli, 天美传媒 Biology student. 鈥淚 have benefitted from the partnership which has helped me focus more on my studies and worry less about providing food for my family. As a result, I am succeeding in my classes and have secured a full-time job in my area of study.鈥

All of these efforts, including the expanded partnership with Gather, support 天美传媒鈥檚 mission to address food insecurity among students and will ensure these needs are met for years to come.

New Exhibit Opens at the Gateway Gallery at 天美传媒 /gbcc-gateway-gallery-shiao-ping-wang/ Thu, 01 Sep 2022 16:14:13 +0000 /?p=26100

The exhibit features abstract paintings of NH based artist Shiao-Ping Wang

PORTSMOUTH – The Gateway Gallery at 天美传媒 Bay Community College is excited to announce the opening exhibition of the 2022-23 academic year with 鈥淐ONNECT, COMBINE, REFLECT鈥 by Rollinsford, NH based artist Shiao-Ping Wang. Representative of the woven and ephemeral nature of human experience, 鈥淐ONNECT, COMBINE, REFLECT鈥 presents a collection of abstract paintings inviting viewers to take a moment of pause and reflect upon the intangible and fleeting nature of much of our daily lives.

The exhibit is open during regular campus hours, which can be found here

Featuring six large scale paintings, Ms. Wang has created a group of works that joyfully welcome inspection and contemplation within the gallery space. Using a combination of acrylics and Flashe, an artist鈥檚 grade vinyl paint, the layered works shift in color as viewers move through the gallery and as the day progresses. The subtle nature of this dynamic presentation ensures a multitude of unique viewing experiences, perfectly reflective of Ms. Wang鈥檚 inspiration for the work.

In addition to the careful and considered use of color, Ms. Wang also incorporates signs, symbols, and patterns to create points of literality within the abstract works. Sinuous lines become understood as knotted thread when viewed next to repeated fabric-like patterning, and the comparatively harsh geometry of punctuation marks and geometric shapes present the viewer with ample opportunities to draw connections between the works and throughout the gallery space.

The exhibition is now open to the public and will remain on view until October 14. A closing reception for the exhibition will be held in October, with further details to follow. The Gateway Gallery is located in the main lobby of 天美传媒鈥檚 Portsmouth campus at the Pease Tradeport , 320 Corporate Avenue, Portsmouth, NH. Any inquiries regarding the exhibition can be made to the gallery curator, Andrew Super, via email at asuper@ccsnh.edu. Exhibit is open during regular campus hours.

New Career by Year鈥檚 End Await 天美传媒 Medical Assistant Students /gbcc-medical-assistant-students-new-career/ Thu, 25 Aug 2022 14:47:20 +0000 /?p=25702

This fall, 天美传媒 Bay will be welcoming its 27th cohort since the program began in 2015.

PORTSMOUTH –听天美传媒 Bay Community College will welcome its next cohort of medical assistant students beginning Sept. 26. This marks the 27th cohort since the program began in 2015.听 Twelve weeks later, those students will be gainfully employed in medical office and hospital settings across the Seacoast.

鈥淭he demand for medical assistants far outstrips the supply,鈥 said Bruce Vance, Program Manager for Healthcare Programs at 天美传媒 Bay鈥檚 Business and Training Center, which administers the Medical Assistant Training Program.

Laurie Merrick, who helps recruit students for the popular program in her role as Business and Training Center assistant, said many students are offered jobs directly from their externships. 鈥淚f someone signs up for the September class, they will be employed and have a new career by the end of the year,鈥 Merrick said. 鈥淲e are constantly getting requests for our medical assistant students.鈥

Medical assistants record and update medical histories and contact information of patients, schedule appointments and draw blood, check vital signs, and collect lab samples. They are often the medical professional a patient interacts with in an exam room before the doctor, collecting information about the patient to help the doctor prepare for the exam. They must have good technical and interpersonal skills and be detailed-oriented.

Students who successfully complete the 天美传媒 Bay program will be versed in medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology, technical aspects of phlebotomy, pharmacology, cardiac life cycle, the proper use and administration of medications, how to obtain and document vital signs, and how to access and record information in electronic medical records.

The program includes 320 hours of classroom instruction and hands-on lab experience, as well as 160 hours of practice and education in local medical offices. After completing the program and receiving their certificate from 天美传媒 Bay, students are eligible to take the National Health Career Association Certified Clinical Medical Assistant exam. Historically, more than 90 percent of 天美传媒 Bay students are employed immediately after completing the program, and that percentage is higher now because of demand and historically low unemployment rates.

Up to two-thirds of the students participating in the program are hired as apprentices with their tuition paid by their employers. 天美传媒 Bay has partnerships with Lamprey Healthcare, 天美传媒er Seacoast Healthcare, Appledore Medical Group, Wentworth Douglass Hospital, and others.

鈥淭hese partnerships are very valuable, as they represent a win-win scenario,鈥 Vance said. 鈥溙烀来 Bay wins because it鈥檚 a boost to our enrollment, and our partners win because they don鈥檛 need to compete for a very limited number of medical assistants. And most importantly, the students win because they know they have a job upon completion of our program.鈥

Lauri Smith of York, Maine, is currently enrolled in the program through a 天美传媒 Bay鈥檚 partnerships and will begin her new career in September. 鈥淚 am starting a new chapter in my life, and 天美传媒 Bay and has given that to me,鈥 said Smith, 58, who moved to area from Illinois to care for her aging parents. 鈥淚 have a whole other lifetime left. It鈥檚 a win-win, and so much more than I expected.鈥

After being away from school for more than 20 years, she has found 天美传媒 Bay to be accommodating and supportive. 鈥淚 can鈥檛 say enough about 天美传媒 Bay. The instructors, the staff, they have all been great. If you have a question, they answer it. If you have confusion, they clear it up,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淓veryone is positive and welcoming, and I feel blessed to be here 鈥 and I want to do better because of that.鈥

Alannah Kunde completed the 天美传媒 Bay program in 2015 and now works as a medical assistant at the Center for Wellbeing in Portsmouth. 鈥溙烀来 Bay was the steppingstone I needed to start my career. I was very eager to join the workforce full time, and the speed of the accelerated program helped keep the finish line in sight. When you attend class for 40 hours a week, you build a close relationship with your teachers and classmates. It always felt like our teachers were rooting for us and were proud of us. For me, this was huge because I always felt supported and knew I had the tools I needed to succeed,鈥 she said.

Kendra Dow of Rochester enrolled in the program in September 2021, completed her externship at Rochester Hill Family Practice, and was hired soon after. She envisions the program as a steppingstone to a career as a nurse.

鈥淭he medical assistant program was a quick course, which was good for me because I am a single mom of two. I was able to take my courses and complete my externship while they were at school,鈥 Dow said. 鈥淚 liked the program because I was able to gain a better sense of the medical field, learn more in depth of what it entails, and I鈥檓 now able to work more hands-on while being able to document and work side-by-side with providers.鈥

Vance said the soul and core success of the Medical Assistant Training Program is the diversity and commitment of the students. 鈥淥ur students range in age from 19 into their 50s. Their backgrounds may or may not be in healthcare. We see those who have earned their GED and those who have earned their bachelor鈥檚 degree and plan on pursuing a career as a doctor or physician鈥檚 assistant,鈥 he said.

Prompts PNSY to Adopt/Develop as Part of Own Professional Development Initiative

PORTSMOUTH – 天美传媒 Bay Community College partnered with Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the soft skills training program WorkReadyNH to further train shipyard employees about workplace civility, conflict management, and effective communication skills.

With funding from the AACC (American Association of Community Colleges) Grant, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard enrolled more than 150 employees from its Trades Apprentice and Worker Skills Progression Program in a series of 8-day sessions at 天美传媒 Bay Community College Portsmouth campus from September 2021 to June 2022. Shipyard employees learned skills to help foster a conflict-free work environment, with positive relationships and respectful behavior among employees.

Prior to the in-person classes at 天美传媒 Bay, the program involved instructors from Manchester and River Valley community colleges teaching classes online, beginning in January 2021. Over 18 months of online and in-person classes, 329 shipyard employees have completed the 8-day sessions, said Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Training Specialist Juliet Freeman.

鈥淭he program has assisted with our focus on the 鈥榳hole person development initiative,鈥欌 Freeman said. 鈥淥ver the last few years, we have been expanding our professional development as a way for employees to grow in their careers here at the Shipyard.鈥

Participants completed independent work, group work, and classroom discussion about such topics as team building, conflict resolution, collaboration, and public speaking. The program also included a section on mock interviews tailored to reflect the interview process at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

The funding from the AACC Grant has expired, but a new iteration of the class will continue in the summer at 天美传媒 Bay鈥檚 Portsmouth campus.

鈥淎s we transition into a new phase of the program and away from the grant-funding initiative, it will be a 40-hour program starting with our next session. The name of this phase will be Workplace Skills, but the content will remain largely the same,鈥 Freeman said.

Dawn Hamdi, WorkReadyNH Director at 天美传媒 Bay Community College, said the positive outcome of the collaboration with the shipyard illustrates the ability of WorkReadyNH to transform the New Hampshire workforce by teaching skills that help employees thrive.

鈥淭he feedback we received from the employees is that they loved being at the college. They felt the environment was engaging and supportive for having the kinds of conversations we were having in class,鈥 Hamdi said.

WorkReadyNH, a tuition-free program available to NH residents who are 16+ years of age, is designed to meet the needs of job seekers and career builders by providing training in specific skills that employers are looking for in their current and future employees, Hamdi said.

天美传媒 Bay to Offer CPIM Courses Starting this September /gbcc-offering-cpim-courses/ Thu, 14 Jul 2022 14:29:17 +0000 /?p=24463

CPIM-1 and 2 courses designed to further advance skills of supply chain professionals

PORTSMOUTH – 天美传媒 Bay Community College will help companies exert more control over their supply chains with new courses offered through the Business & Training Center at the Rochester campus, beginning in September.

The college will partner with the Association for Supply Chain Management Northern New England to offer the Certified Production and Inventory Management exam preparation program. The CPIM certification demonstrates proficiency in supply chain fundamentals and inventory management.

天美传媒 Bay will offer CPIM-1, a seven-week course, from Sept. 22-Nov. 3. Participants will learn an overview of supply chain management, including the fundamentals of demand and inventory, plan supply, and continuous improvement and quality-control techniques. Coursework will cover the manufacture of goods, their procurement, distribution, and sale from perspectives of suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, and customers.

CPIM-2 will follow in mid-January and offer a more strategic overview of supply chains, with focus on sales and operations planning, inventory, and distribution.

Paul Moriarty, who has more than 25 years of experience in supply chain operations, will teach the courses. He is an independent consultant and contractor with clients in New England and Canada and is a certified Association for Supply Chain Management instructor with a range of industry and higher education experience. In addition to his adjunct position at 天美传媒 Bay, he is an adjunct faculty member at Northern Essex Community College.

鈥淗aving a long interest in supply chain functionality, I bring in-depth experience, ranging from seeing customer wants, needs, and demands through engineering and operation, to delivery of goods and services,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 relish in the 鈥榓h-ha鈥 moment when I am explaining a concept, and it is understood by those I am teaching.鈥

The coursework is targeted for people entering and working in production and inventory management, operations, supply chain management, procurement, materials management, purchasing, and planning.

Supply chain interruptions, caused by a myriad of factors, contribute to inflation and economic instability, Moriarty said. Companies that are in control of their supply chains and able to manage them effectively have a competitive edge. 鈥淪upply chain issues are having a profound impact in New England,鈥 he said. 鈥淎nd a big issue is having a trained, flexible, workforce that can adapt to changing technologies and processes.鈥

CCSNH Students Awarded NH BioMade Research Fellowships /ccsnh-students-biomade-research-fellowships/ Tue, 28 Jun 2022 20:40:59 +0000 /?p=24084

Four students will be conducting biomaterials-related research this summer

Concord, N.H. (June 23, 2022) – Five Community College of New Hampshire (CCSNH) students have been selected for the NH BioMade (Undergraduate Research Training (URT) program. Four have accepted and will spend the summer conducting biomaterials-related research.

天美传媒 Bay Community College (天美传媒) students Nick Mixon, Mason Jacques and April Weeks along with Manchester Community College (MCC) student Gwendolyn Tupman will receive $600 per week to work with a faculty mentor as a member of a research team. This is the fourth year that CCSNH students have been invited and grant funding through the NH BioMade program to explore a pathway to the rapidly growing, high wage biomanufacturing workforce.

鈥淭hese are particularly powerful experiences for recent CCSNH graduates, boosting their scientific skills and knowledge in the summer just prior to transfer,鈥 said Dr. Leslie Barber, 天美传媒 professor of biological science and CCSNH faculty fellow. 鈥淏y choosing a research experience at the institution they plan to attend, students can also build connections with faculty and other students. Time and time again, we have seen how these prior connections ease the transfer experience and contribute to later student success. But whether transferring or returning to CCSNH to complete their degree, all of our participants benefit from the boost of confidence and insight that comes from this experience with professional scientific research.鈥

The New Hampshire Center for Multiscale Modeling and Manufacturing of Biomaterials (NH BioMade) program is led by UNH, in partnership with Dartmouth College, CCSNH, Keene State College and UNH-Manchester. Its goal is to advance the design and manufacture of biomaterials and develop the knowledge to predict and control their composition, structure, properties, and function. Accomplished through a 鈥渕odel, make and measure鈥 systems-level approach to research, NH BioMade supports听New Hampshire鈥檚 biomaterials industry through knowledge generation, academic-industrial research partnerships, and workforce development, enabling rapid advancement in biomaterials design and manufacturing. Biomaterials, such as those used in implants and tissue engineering are the focus for NH BioMade research in areas of composites for orthopedics, sheet metal for trauma fixation, scaffolds for tissue regeneration and structures for biosensor applications.

The specific projects in which CCSNH URT students will be participating are:

Nick Mixon, from Rochester and a current student in the Chemistry program at 天美传媒, will be working with Won Hyuk Suh, assistant professor of biotechnology at UNH Manchester on the “Peptide Hydrogels for 3D Printing of Human STEM Cells” project.

Mason Jacques, from Rochester and a recent graduate of 天美传媒 with an associate degree in Engineering Science, will be working with Katie Hixon, assistant professor of engineering at Dartmouth College on the “Assessing the Feasibility of Integrating 3-D Printing and Polymer Scaffolds” project. Reflects on course designed to assist students with navigating college to career choices

PORTSMOUTH – Dr. Aimee E. Huard, professor and chair of Social Sciences at 天美传媒 Bay Community College, is getting national attention for a course she designed to help students make better choices about college and careers.

An anthropologist, Huard recently published an article in听Anthropology News听highlighting how 天美传媒 Bay students use ethnographic methods to analyze shifting workplace cultures. The piece, is based on Huard鈥檚 experience with her popular course, Introduction to Ethnography: The World of Work. Anthropology News听is the American Anthropological Association鈥檚 (AAA) award-winning member magazine, published on the web and bimonthly in print.

Introduced four years ago, the course approaches the working life as a cultural system of norms, and students explore careers through the cultural meaning entrenched in workplace expectations and values. They use anthropological research techniques to evaluate myths and stereotypes and gain insight into what motivates people who are successful in their careers. Through their own research based on interviews with working professionals, students have an easier time seeing the difference between a job and a career.

鈥淭he theories and techniques of anthropology have always been adaptive鈥攖hey provide seasoned practitioners and new students a simple set of methods to interact with their world more deeply and critically,鈥 Huard writes in the article. 鈥淏y approaching the world of work as if it was a brand new culture, students gain a more holistic view of their current world, but also how to shape it through their careers and choices.鈥

In an interview, Huard said she was pleased to highlight the work of a community college and community college students in a prestigious professional journal. 鈥淚n a lot of literature, the focus is on four-year students. You don鈥檛 see a lot of attention paid to community colleges, so having something published in a journal as widely read as the Anthropology News, that is important,鈥 Huard said. 鈥淐ommunity college students do truly excellent work under sometimes challenging conditions. Most are working full time, most have outside obligations, and the fact that they are this devoted to their education needs to be celebrated and highlighted.鈥

The article considers the world of college students as they grapple with the purpose of college and with choosing careers.

鈥淪tudents are not always sure how college connects with career goals,鈥 Huard said. 鈥淚n a lot of cases, students come in with likes and dislikes, but they are not sure how those fit with the courses they need to graduate. This course is designed to find, or refine, a particular career pathway. The purpose of the course is to give them a series of tools using ethnographic technologies and a holistic approach to find the right career.鈥

Huard has enjoyed an outstanding academic and professional career. She graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in anthropology/sociology from Elmira College, and earned graduate degrees in anthropology 鈥 an M.A. from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, and a Ph.D, from Binghamton University. She is a member of anthropological, science, and paleopathology professional associations, has presented papers at conferences and been awarded the Chancellor鈥檚 Award for Teaching Excellence.
